Community Guidelines

VRChat is a platform and community where you can be anyone, create anything, and interact with people from all walks of life. You will encounter one-of-a-kind experiences that are fun, uplifting, off the beaten path, and potentially inspiring.

All of these experiences are possible thanks to our amazing community. The Community Guidelines (“Guidelines”) we follow make VRChat a fun and safe place to reside in.

In these guidelines, we want you to understand two main things:

  1. Don't do things that will hurt or harm other people. Don't act in ways that would upset people, cause them trouble, or disturb them.

  2. Keep private things private. If you have content that might be sensitive, intimate, or provocative, keep it in private spaces with consenting adults.

The Terms of Service (“Terms”), available at https://hello.vrchat.com/legal, govern VRChat and all activities within it. These Guidelines are part of the Terms, intended to expand and explain certain parts of them in greater detail.

We reserve the right to:

  1. Maintain sole and final discretion to interpret these Guidelines

  2. Enforce these Guidelines on a case-by-case basis

  3. Revise the guidelines at any time to keep VRChat safe for everyone

The Terms of Service are the final word, and the Guidelines are meant to help you understand how we expect you to behave in VRChat.

If you're looking for guidelines governing content creation in VRChat, check out our Creator Guidelines.

Instance Behavior

There are many types of instances in VRChat. Each type lets you select who can join the instance you create. Here are some guidelines to keep in mind depending on the instance you're in.

Please note these Guidelines and the Terms supersede any instance guidelines.

Public Instances

“Public” instances are easily accessible to anyone. This includes Public and Group Public instances.

  • Do not disrupt or troll public instances with provocative behavior, which includes but is not limited to:

    • Adult content or behavior, controversial topics

    • Sensitive, intimate, or provocative content or activities

  • Do not interrupt or disrupt people's activities or games! Every world may have its own rules, so it's hard to cover all the bases and control behavior in every case. This includes:

    • Cheating

    • Abusing in-platform or in-instance systems

    • Not being a good sport, or just generally being a jerk

Private Instances

Private instances need an invitation or an "in" to enter. This includes Invite and Invite+ instances, Friends and Friends+ instances, and Group and Group+ instances.

  • While these guidelines govern all behavior, the present authority may have their own set of rules and expectations. This could be the instance creator, event runners, group or venue moderators, a party host, a game master, or whatever is appropriate.

  • If a report is made from a Private Instance, we interpret that report as a violation of the rules in that instance and will be moderated as if it were Public.

  • Private instances that advertise themselves publicly will be considered public for the purposes of moderation.

  • The provocative behavior restrictions will not apply in Private instances as long as everyone present consents.

    • Minors cannot consent to provocative behavior. People who engage in provocative behavior with minors present will always be subject to enforcement, no matter what instance type they are in.

    • Harmful, hateful, or illegal activity is never allowed on VRChat, even if everyone is informed or consents.

Group Instances

Group instances are instances created by a Group. These include Group Public, Group+, and Group-Only instances.

  • Groups may moderate their instances how they see fit within the bounds of our guidelines. Group moderators can employ verbal or text-based warnings, system-level warnings, kicks, or bans to enforce their rules.

  • Group instance rules must be reasonable. In other words, people should be informed about the rules, the rules should be fair, and the rules should make sense for the environment.

    • It is the responsibility of the Group to inform Group instance occupants of any Group rules they need to follow.

    • Any rules should be fair. They should be possible to follow, and they should be consistent with the VRChat Guidelines.

    • The rules should make sense and should not be exploitative. For example:

      • Acceptable: Requiring people to wear Poor or better avatars at a crowded event

      • Unacceptable: Requiring people to watch an advertisement before joining a Group instance

    • Groups should handle Group moderation appeals and processes. VRChat Trust and Safety does not handle Group ban appeals. Requests submitted to VRChat Trust and Safety regarding Group bans may not receive a response.

      • Having an appeal process for your Group is ideal. However, you aren't required to have such a process. You may approve or deny Group ban appeals as you see fit, or inform people that "no appeals are accepted".

Zero-Tolerance Policy

We have a zero-tolerance policy for some violations that may lead to critical physical, psychological, and societal harm. These policy violations will be enforced with an immediate, permanent, and irreversible ban.

These zero-tolerance offenses encompass, but are not limited to, the distribution of child sexual abuse material (“CSAM”), CSEA, non-consensual intimate imagery, credible threats of violence posing real-world physical harm, and terrorist content. Our aim is to ensure a safe environment by taking swift and decisive action against such egregious behaviors and activities.

This approach underscores our commitment to maintaining a safe and welcoming community for all people, where serious harmful behaviors are met with immediate and decisive consequences.

Behavior Outside of VRChat

If you experience harassment or receive unwanted communications from other people on platforms outside of VRChat, it is crucial to utilize the moderation tools or reporting procedures available on those specific platforms.

Please be aware that VRChat may consider relevant off-platform behavior, such as hateful conduct or harmful conduct toward minors supported by credible and verifiable evidence, when conducting a review to determine appropriate enforcement action.

Appeal

To appeal an enforcement on your account, please submit an appeal request. We will thoroughly examine the details provided and subsequently notify you of the outcome.
